Roadrunner turns a bipedal robot into a wheeled shape-shifter

It stands up from the ground, rolls on side-by-side wheels, then snaps into in-line mode when the terrain changes.

Watch it in action

Roadrunner is built for instant transformation: a bipedal wheeled robot that can stand, drive, and step depending on the ground in front of it.

Three ways to move

The prototype weighs about 15 kg and can switch between side-by-side driving, in-line driving, and stepping. Its symmetric legs let the robot point its knees forward or backward, helping it navigate around obstacles and awkward surfaces.

The visual trick

The striking part is not just that it moves — it changes posture like a machine reconfiguring itself in real time. Roadrunner can stand up from the ground, balance on one wheel, and keep going without needing a different body for each task.

  • Stand up from the ground
  • Drive with wheels side-by-side
  • Shift into in-line wheel mode
  • Step when terrain demands it

Why it stands out

Most robots are designed to be either walkers or wheelers. Roadrunner blurs that line, combining both styles into one compact form that looks almost cinematic in motion.

In motion, it feels less like one robot and more like a robot choosing its body style on the fly.
