The most unforgettable seat in Rome may have been the one inside the Colosseum, where Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was screened in HD with a live performance of Hans Zimmer’s score.
A movie soundtrack in a ruin built for spectacle
For one night, the Colosseum became both cinema and stage: conductor Justin Freer led the Italian Film Orchestra, while Lisa Gerrard added her voice to the score she helped define.
The result was cinematic in the most literal sense — image, music and ancient architecture all locked together under the same spotlight.
Then the scale jumped to Circo Massimo
The event expanded beyond the Colosseum with larger performances at Circo Massimo, Rome’s former chariot-racing stadium and now a major concert venue.
- Colosseum: a charity curtain raiser for an invited crowd.
- Circo Massimo: larger, festival-style shows over the same week.
- Special guests: Russell Crowe and Francesco Totti were among the attendees.
Visually, it is hard to top: illuminated arches, a giant screen, a live orchestra, and one of the world’s most recognizable ruins framing the whole scene.
The wow factor is not just the music — it’s the setting.
Few live events feel this close to a film set and this far from anything ordinary.
